THE CONNECTIVE NETWORK OF THE HUMAN BODY

Fascia is a continuous connective tissue network that surrounds, connects and supports structures throughout the body.

Rather than existing as isolated tissues and muscles, the body is organised through relationships between structures. Fascia forms part of this interconnected system and plays an important role in how tension and force are transmitted throughout the body.

Understanding fascia helps us understand why changes in one region of the body can influence how other regions organise and move.


Perspective on Fascia


Fascia was historically described primarily as connective tissue surrounding and separating muscles and other structures. Today, it is understood as a continuous, adaptable network with important mechanical and sensory roles throughout the body.

Fascia surrounds and connects muscles, bones, nerves, blood vessels and organs, while allowing structures to move in relation to one another.

Because this network extends throughout the body, changes in tension or movement within one region can influence mechanical relationships elsewhere.

At Primal Posture, fascia is therefore considered as part of the wider human system — alongside structure, movement, load and the nervous system.


The Matrix


Fascia forms a three-dimensional connective network throughout the body.

This network provides structural support while allowing tissues to move, slide and adapt as the body changes position and responds to load.

Fascia is not passive. It responds to mechanical forces and contributes to the transmission of tension between different regions of the body.

This means movement in one area does not occur entirely in isolation. Forces can be distributed through interconnected tissues, influencing how the wider system organises and responds.

At Primal Posture, this continuous network is one of the reasons we assess relationships across the whole body rather than considering individual regions independently.


Fascia is a Sensory System


Fascia is richly supplied with sensory receptors that respond to mechanical changes such as tension, pressure and movement.

This sensory information contributes to the body's awareness of position and movement and forms part of the continuous communication between the tissues and nervous system.

As the body moves and interacts with its environment, information from the fascial system contributes to how the nervous system perceives and responds to changing mechanical demands.

This makes fascia more than a structural network. It is also part of the body's sensory system, linking physical organisation, movement and perception.


Stress, the Nervous System and the Body


Physical and psychological stress can influence the way the body behaves.

Changes in breathing, muscle tone, movement and protective responses can alter how tension is distributed throughout the body.

Because fascia is mechanically and neurologically connected with the structures it surrounds, changes in movement and muscular tension can also influence the mechanical environment of the fascial system.

This does not mean that emotions are physically stored within fascia. Rather, the body and nervous system continually adapt to experience, environment and perceived demand.

Understanding these interactions allows us to consider the physical system within the broader context of how a person moves, responds and adapts.


When Fascia Becomes Restricted


Fascia needs to accommodate movement between the structures it surrounds and connects.

Changes in load, movement, injury, repetitive activity or prolonged positioning can influence the mechanical behaviour of fascial tissues.

When areas of the fascial system become less adaptable, movement between tissues may be reduced and tension may be distributed differently through the surrounding system.

Because fascia forms a continuous network, these changes may influence how other regions organise and respond to movement and load.

At Primal Posture, we assess these restrictions as part of the wider system rather than assuming that the area where tension or discomfort is experienced is necessarily where the problem began.


How Myofascial Release Fits In


Myofascial release is one way of working with areas of tension and restriction within the fascial system.

The aim is to influence tissue mobility, reduce unnecessary tension and create different movement options within the system.

Any change is then considered in relation to the rest of the body and, where appropriate, reassessed through posture and movement.

At Primal Posture, myofascial release is not treated as an isolated intervention. It forms part of a wider process of assessment, intervention and reassessment.


Signs of Fascial Restriction


Changes within the fascial system may be experienced in different ways.


Some common signs that may warrant further assessment include:

• Persistent areas of tension or stiffness
• Reduced or restricted movement
• Differences in movement between sides of the body
• Areas that repeatedly become tight under load
• Movement that feels limited or difficult
• Tension that returns despite repeatedly working on the same area


These signs do not necessarily identify where a restriction originates. Assessment allows us to examine how the area relates to the wider system.


Supporting Your Fascia Between Sessions


What happens between appointments can influence how the body responds to the work performed in the clinic.


Simple ways to support movement and tissue adaptability include:

  1. Maintain regular, varied movement throughout the day
  2. Avoid remaining in the same position for unnecessarily long periods
  3. Stay adequately hydrated
  4. Use self-myofascial release techniques where they have been recommended for you
  5. Pay attention to how your body responds rather than forcing movement through pain or significant discomfort


The aim is not to maintain a “perfect” posture or constantly correct your body. It is to provide the system with opportunities to move, adapt and respond to different demands.


Listening to Your Body


The body is constantly responding to movement, load, environment and experience.

Changes in tension, comfort and movement can provide useful information about how the system is responding to those demands.

Developing greater awareness of these responses can help you recognise patterns — what feels restricted, what changes with movement and how different activities influence your body.

At Primal Posture, this information becomes another part of understanding the system rather than something considered in isolation.


Understanding Your System


IFascia is one part of a much larger human system.

How it behaves is influenced by movement, load, structure and its relationship with the tissues around it.

Understanding these relationships requires more than identifying where tension or discomfort is felt. It requires looking at how the body is organised and how the system responds when we create change.

Fascia: The Connective Network of the Human Body

Fascia forms a continuous three-dimensional connective tissue network throughout the body.

Rather than functioning as simple wrapping or packing material, fascia is an active, adaptable tissue that responds to movement and mechanical load.

Its organisation allows forces generated in one region to be transmitted and distributed through interconnected structures.

Fascia also contains sensory receptors that contribute information about tension, pressure, position and movement to the nervous system.

These mechanical and sensory roles make fascia an important part of how the body organises itself, moves and responds to changing demands.

Evolution: The Fabric That Shaped Us

Fascia has developed alongside the structures and movement capabilities of the human body.

As humans adapted to upright posture, walking, running, throwing and increasingly complex movement, the connective tissues of the body also had to accommodate changing patterns of load, tension and force.

Fascia contributes to these capabilities by connecting structures, transmitting mechanical forces and adapting to the demands placed upon the body.

Rather than representing a fixed evolutionary blueprint, the fascial system is adaptable. Its properties can change in response to movement, loading, injury, inactivity and repeated physical demands.

This adaptability is important to Primal Posture. The body is not simply a structure that has been assembled — it is a living system that continually responds to how it is used.


Posture and Movement: How the System Organises Under Load

Posture and movement are different expressions of the same human system.

Posture shows how the body organises itself in relation to gravity and load. Movement shows how that organisation changes as the body moves through space and interacts with force.

The feet, knees, pelvis, spine, ribcage, shoulders and head do not function independently. Their positions and movements influence how force is transferred throughout the system.

By observing these relationships in standing and then progressively through movement, we can identify patterns that may not be apparent when individual regions are considered in isolation.

At Primal Posture, posture is therefore not about achieving a single “perfect” position. It provides information about how the system is currently organised and gives us a starting point for understanding how that organisation influences movement.

Tensegrity: How the Body Distributes Force

The human body maintains its structure through relationships between compression and tension.

Bones provide areas of compression, while muscles, fascia, tendons and other connective tissues contribute to a continuous system of tension around them.

This interconnected arrangement helps distribute mechanical forces across the body rather than requiring individual structures to manage those forces entirely on their own.

When tension, position or movement changes in one region, the mechanical relationships elsewhere in the system may also change.

Tensegrity provides a useful model for understanding why the body cannot always be understood by examining individual parts in isolation.

At Primal Posture, we use this principle to consider how changes within one region may influence the organisation and force distribution of the wider human system.


What we do

Primal Posture combines structural assessment, myofascial release and human biomechanics to understand how the body is organised and how it manages movement and force.

We assess posture, fascial tension and movement to identify relationships and compensation patterns within the system.

What we observe guides the intervention. We may use myofascial release to address restrictions, biomechanics to develop different movement strategies, or a combination of both.

We then reassess how the body responds, allowing each session to inform what happens next.
